During the summer of 1917, 12th Division remained in and around Arras and were spared the horrors and miseries of Third Ypres or the Battle of Passchendaele, taking place further north. Not that life was a picnic in the Arras trenches where there had been a large battle fought earlier in the year. On 30th August, 1917, 8th Royal Fusiliers of 36 Brigade moved into the front line trenches at Monchy, to the east of Arras, and on the evening of 2nd September, the day on which George Mason was killed, the battalion on their right carried out a successful raid to which the enemy artillery responded by shelling the British trenches.
